German main-clause word order, compressed. From Lesson 01.
Main clause = one element in position 1, the conjugated verb in position 2, everything else in the middle, and any second verb part at the very end.
| Type | Pos. 2 | End | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simple | verb | — | Ich lerne Deutsch. |
| Modal | modal | infinitive | Ich muss heute lernen. |
| Perfekt | haben/sein | participle | Ich habe Deutsch gelernt. |
| Separable | stem | prefix | Ich stehe um 7 auf. |
| Subordinate | — | verb last | …, weil ich arbeite. |
Position 1 = exactly one element. The verb stays in position 2, so the subject moves after it.
When several middle elements stack up, the default order is:
| Temporal | Kausal | Modal | Lokal |
|---|---|---|---|
| wann? | warum? | wie? | wo/wohin? |
| heute | deshalb | mit dem Zug | nach Berlin |
Ich fahre heute deshalb mit dem Zug nach Berlin.
weil · dass · wenn · ob · damit · obwohl · während · bevor · nachdem · als
Ich lerne Deutsch, weil ich in Deutschland arbeiten will.
Before speaking: pick the sentence type, drop the conjugated verb into slot 2, hold its partner for the end. One element before the verb, never two.
